In short: anti-drone defense is mostly a detection problem, not a shooting problem. A system has to spot a small aircraft, tell it apart from a bird, then decide whether to jam its signal or physically destroy it. Kinetic fire is usually the last option, not the first.
The common picture is a gun or missile knocking a drone out of the sky. Reality is quieter. By the time anything is fired, the drone has already been found, classified, and tracked by several sensors, and in most incidents an operator has tried to cut its radio link before reaching for a warhead.

Finding a target the size of a bird
A commercial quadcopter presents a radar cross-section near 0.01 square meters, roughly what a large bird returns. That is the core difficulty. Standard air-traffic radar is tuned to ignore objects that small, so counter-drone sites use dedicated radar that discards clutter and keeps the faint, slow tracks that older systems throw away. Radio-frequency sensors listen for the control link instead, and electro-optical cameras with infrared give a visual confirmation once the radar hands off a bearing.
Acoustic arrays add a short-range backup, though they rarely reach past a few hundred meters in noisy environments. No single sensor is reliable alone.
Telling a drone from everything else
Detection is worthless without classification. A track that turns out to be a flock of starlings wastes an operator's attention and, worse, ammunition. Most consumer drones broadcast on the 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz ISM bands, and their control protocols carry recognizable signatures, so an RF library can often name the exact model and sometimes read its home point. This is where a radar built to ignore clutter earns its keep, because it feeds a clean track that the software can cross-check against the radio fingerprint before anyone acts.
Soft-kill: breaking the link before breaking the drone
The preferred defeat method is electronic. A directional jammer floods the drone's control and video frequencies, and the aircraft either hovers, returns home, or lands, depending on how it was programmed. GPS denial works on the same logic: the civilian L1 signal arrives at about -130 dBm, weak enough that a modest local transmitter overpowers it, so spoofing can walk a drone off course without touching it. Jamming is cheap, reusable, and leaves no falling debris. It also fails against drones flying a pre-loaded route with no live link.
Hard-kill: when the link cannot be cut
Autonomous or fiber-optic-guided drones ignore jamming, and that is when defenders turn to physical effectors. Options run from cannon fire and net-launchers to high-energy lasers in the 10 to 50 kilowatt range and small interceptor drones that ram the target. Because none of these covers every case, serious installations are built in layers, with soft-kill first and the same kinetic interceptors used in wider air defense systems held in reserve for the threats that get through.
What operators weigh when choosing a response:
- Is the drone still on a live radio link, or flying blind on a saved route?
- What sits behind it, since a missed shot or falling drone lands somewhere
- Cost per engagement, which ranges from cents of jamming power to five-figure interceptors
- Rules of engagement over populated areas, where kinetic fire is often banned
- How many targets arrive at once, since one laser beats twenty separate gun crews
